The committee's focus is creating a gateway to Kentucky information on the web. This is our niche. Not all Kentucky data is produced by state agencies but state agencies will be our primary focus in the beginning.
At some point we also would like to provide a gateway to federal information on the web.
The committee decided to add a Kentucky Statistics link to the KCVL Government Information page. This will be listed on the blue bar and also on the table of contents section.
Bill will assign a workgroup to identify the links to include under Kentucky Statistics. The statistical links will be based on the Statistical Abstract of the U.S Gary will compile a list of subject headings based on that publication.
We will not need a consultant.
Glen and Charles will investigate further using GILS (Global Information Locator Service) and possible KCVL involvment. Charles will report back to the group via email.
We discussed the need for a user-friendly search interface to use to find Kentucky statistical information and the need for statistical information specific to Kentucky.
We looked at several government information resources web sites including Oregon State, University of Virginia and the Kentucky Information Page and discussed the possibility of linking to a site.
We discussed the pros and cons of American Factfinder. Pros- (1)covers other areas besides Kentucky so would be useful for those not doing research on Kentucky or comparing to Kentucky to other areas (2) user does not have to know where the information comes from in order to find it. Cons- (1) not easy to use, (2) can't connect directly to Kentucky, (3) can't get tract information
