Government Information Access Subcommittee Minutes

Government Information Committee
Meeting Minutes
February 29, 2000

Present: Bill Richardson, Charles Robb, Gary Austin, Sandra McAninch, Roxanna Jones, Carrie Stephenson, Beverly Daley, Miko Pattie, Rae Shepherd-Shlechter, Susan Brown, Jackie Kinder

We revised the committee membership contact list. Larry Besant will be removed and Bill Richardson will check with Sharon Marsh to see if she wants to be removed as well.

Gary Austin distributed the suggested subject headings and guidelines for the Kentucky Statistical Abstract project. The sources could be federal/state/etc. The focus in the beginning will be on linking to existing free statistical sources.

KCVL will create a Government Information Listserv.

Gary will flesh out and distribute the guidelines and subject headings and distribute it to the listserv for further discussion.

Gary will talk to Matt Onion about the possibility of GODORT becoming involved in the project and creating pathfinders. GODORT will be meeting in Frankfort in May. Gary will check with Matt to see if the committee could meet with GODORT then.

Folks who agree to develop pathfinders will have their name attached to their efforts. This will give them a sense of ownership and also recognition. Pages would be sent to Susan Brown for uploading.

Rae Shepherd-Schlechter volunteered to do Patents and Trademarks.

As agreed at the January meeting, a heading for Kentucky Statistical Abstract will be added to the blue bar on the KCVL GIA webpages.

Susan Brown will also add the "Search Kentucky Pages" to the blue bar. She will also explore the possibility of creating a template for potential pathfinder volunteers to use.

Charles Robb updated the committee on the GILS initiative. KDLA is definitely interested. A draft policy statement has been sent to Doug Robinson (GOT). There is a possibility of funding for software/hardware or KDLA may have some internal funds. They are exploring staffing issues. The National GILS conference is in March (Santa Fe, NM). Charles Robb will be attending and will report back to the group at the next meeting.

Doug will get back to Charles on GILS. When Charles hears back he will send an update to the listserv.

The possibility of linking Dublin Core to our Statistical Abstract was mentioned.

Susan Brown discussed the possibility of using SiteSearch Database Builder to catalog our website. Susan and Jackie are attending a training session at OCLC in May.

Sandra McAninch volunteered to create a union list of federal documents available in the state. This would be a useful tool to ILL so that people are not requesting material through ILL that is on their own local shelves. She will check on MARCIVE costs and if they would create a database.

The future role of the GIA committee will include overseeing the development of pathfinders. As well as arrangement of links and information placed on the GIA page.

It was decided to not have another meeting until May. We will use the listserv to communicate in the meantime.
