This was the first meeting of the new GIA Workgroup which is replacing the GIA Subcommittee. Our first task was to decide on a charge for the workgroup and prioritize the projects we want to focus on to support our charge.
The GIA workgroup's charge will be-
To advise the Kentucky Virtual Library (KYVL) in evaluating, organizing and
disseminating web-based government information with an emphasis on Kentucky.
Projects the group will work on are-
Create a Kentucky Statistical Abstract
Add more website links to the KYVL Government Information pages
Create a union catalog of both state and federal publications
Create conceptual pathfinders for how to find government information
We decided that our first priority is to create the Kentucky Statistical Abstract. This will be a value-added pathfinder to statistical information about Kentucky. Gary will send Jackie the lists and disks he has collected so far. Jackie will add a KY Statistical Abstract test site to the GIA Workgroup page on KYVL.
Sandee will try to recruit volunteer subject specialists at KLA. Rae will also try to recruit folks to help us with this project. Sandee will check with the UK Library School to see if any students would like to help.
We will also conduct a survey to determine who is collecting and cataloguing state and federal publications. Jackie will add the Survey to the GIA Workgroup page on KYVL. Carrie will ask the AIKCU libraries to fill out the survey. Rae will contact the Public Libraries, Sandee will contact the SAALCK libraries and Matt will contact the KCTCS libraries.
We also discussed the new GILS project and the possibility of a partnership with the GILS folks. Jackie will contact Barbara Teague to see if she can be added to the GILS Project committee.
NEXT MEETING-- October 30 from 1 pm to 3 pm in Conference Room D at the CPE/KYVL office in Frankfort.
