Information Literacy Subcommittee Minutes

Present: Janet Brewer, Susan Brown, Jill Buckland, Susan Henthorn, Anna Marie Johnson, Tom Kmetz, Miko Pattie, Emily Werrell, Haiwang Yuan

Consultant's Report:
General discussion of Paula Doherty's report assessing the tutorial. All present were pleased with the quality of the report and felt that it offers excellent specific recommendations for improvement.  The committee agreed with Paula's recommendation that two separate versions of the tutorial be created: one for the general public and one for an academic audience.  

• Resolved to pursue first the version for the general public, reasoning that since KYVU is looking into other software providers (besides Eduprise) for online courses, we should postpone work on the academic version until that decision has been made. (A contract will be signed in July 2001.)
• We had some concerns about the recommendation to delete the quizzes from the individual units.  Emily will contact Paula to ask about this.
• Miko will contact Paula to ask whether she would be interested in the next phase of the project -- creating the "general public" version of the tutorial and implementing the recommended changes.  If not we will need to write a second RFP before the next meeting (Susan H., Susan B., Emily).

Future Projects:
Brief discussion of future initiatives for the committee. Brainstormed ideas:

• Look at the "How to navigate the gateway" page and recommend changes
• Create teacher's guides
• Create librarian's guides
• Offer workshops
• Create a quick tour of KYVL
• Create exercises to learn how to use a database/catalog

Decided to work first on the gateway page and to have recommendations ready for the next meeting.  Everyone needs to come prepared November 8 with suggestions for improvement.  The "How to navigate the gateway" page is accessible from the "For Kentuckians" link on the KYVL home page.
