COMMONWEALTH VIRTUAL LIBRARY
CVL Information Literacy Subcommittee Meeting
February 12, 1999
Frankfort, KY
NEXT MEETING: March 5, 1999 1 p.m. in Frankfort
(we
will try to have virtual meetings soon)
Minutes:
Part 1: as things were said (early part of
meeting)
Part 2: comments on individual modules as
we went through them
Part 3: questions for Chad/Collegis
collected into one list
Part 1: as things were said (early part of meeting)
Chad couldn't be here at this meeting, he will be at the March meeting. He will help us
do the design like he helps the professors.
The files will be housed on the Collegis server, but we will have passwords.
We need to think about when to put interaction. Will we be imbedding scripts into lessons?
CGI and/or Java? What level of interactive. It would be nice to have animation.
Automatic grading is possible in other systems. Forum is one of the real strengths in
Collegis.
Can we do simple multiple choice in Collegis?
We will need test results, not only to assess the students, but to revise & improve
our modules.
Time lines have been revised a bit. Pilot projects will still start in August, Databases
should be up July 1. Training for Collegis is in place.
We will need to train librarians, including public librarians in how to use our
Information Literacy modules. We should plan to do training at KLA meetings, and at Public
Library meetings.
By July 1, we should have:
the tutorials in place
a comprehensive plan on how the state will
be trained
this committee will also be responsible
for training for databases (and hopefully
the databases will come with good help
files)
We will need to also do training for / work with the project managers of the pilot
projects, to help them integrate IL into their classes/syllabi. It would be ideal to come
up with examples that would be of some interest to the individual programs: fire safety,
speech pathology, etc.
We will need to talk to everyone: we need to know exactly how ILL, reference, etc. will
work, so we know how to inform people.
There will be a Help Desk that, ideally, will be staffed by librarians with technical
knowledge.
In the end, the institution(s) providing the program will be ultimately responsible for
providing the materials for their students.
REVIEW OF MAJOR POINTS SO FAR:
consultant questions
training plan: tutorial for reference, doc
delivery, databases
librarians
across the state
project
directors
training session materials for tutorial
Technology committee will do an Endeavor module for STAFF. Info Lit will do Endeavor for
END USERS.
Each institution will provide support, probably staff assigned to courses. CPE will
provide general support.
Should at least copyright out material.
The Call Center will have five positions. The Library Help Desk will have four positions,
at least that is the preliminary plan.
This committee will probably need to do some training for the Call Center people, and
perhaps the Help Desk people.
We should have one consistent overarching metaphor:
information jungle / explorer / machete /
Indiana Jones
spy / Mission Impossible
detective / Sherlock Holmes
are possible.
As well as using consistent search topic(s), like we started with "gun control".
Perhaps one in humanities, one social sciences, one hard science.
Maybe Public Policy throughout? ( www.policy.com
might help in this)
What about external links? Will they stay in a frame? Will we use off-site search boxes on
our pages?
Library of Congress Subject Headings are pretty consistent throughout, aren't they? Is
Sears or some other subject catalog used?
Need to have one unified glossary for all the modules.
Would be nice to have some animated graphics of Venn diagrams for OR and AND and NOT.
Have a pre-test, as demod, where at least we have people think about whether they
should look in books, periodicals, internet, catalog, indexes or search engines.
Part 2: comments on individual modules as we went through them
Should we have search engines throughout, where ever it comes up, or have one module?
quiz: steps to finding a book (need to cover all the way through ILL/doc delivery)
research takes time
truncation symbol can be *, #, ?
show false hits - gun? can bring up Gunsmoke
How open is open: will everyone in the state really be able to get to these tutorials?
order of AND NOT OR, and parentheses: tell them "think algebra"
Search engines should be illustrative, not exhaustive - we can't explain every engine and
its interfaces.
Beginning of advanced, have a pointer back to basic, just in case people hit
"advanced" and they really aren't.
Show limiting to full text, limiting to scholarly journals
Omitting initial article
How dashes between words can affect the search.
Evaluating web pages, breaking down a URL
Should we cover somewhere "what is publishing" print vs. electronic
Can we have a consistent "CVL" logo, so that people will know what is
trustworthy or not.
Part 3: questions for Chad/Collegis collected into one list
We think that files will be housed on the Collegis server, but we will have passwords and
the ability to change things as needed: is this correct?
We want to have interaction, and possibly animation. Will that be possible?
How? Will we be imbedding scripts into lessons? CGI and/or Java?
What level of interaction?
Of animation? We would like to have Venn diagrams animating OR, NOT, AND.
What kind of testing/assessment is available?
Can we do simple multiple choice quizzes in Collegis?
Can we do fill-in-the-blank?
More complicated testing?
Since we are providing modules that might be used in several classes, can we send grade
reports multiple places (to the instructor for their purposes, and to us to improve our
modules?)
What can we/should we do with external links? Will our visitors stay in a frame on our
page, or be provided with a "back" button that works, or some other means?
We would like to have a pre-test and then tests at the end of each module: will we be able
to analyze results inside Collegis, or take the results out to different programs for
analysis.
