COMMONWEALTH VIRTUAL LIBRARY

CVL Information Literacy Subcommittee Meeting
March 5, 1999
Frankfort, KY

Present: Hannelore Rader, chair, Janet Brewer, Steve Stone, Jill Buckland, Tom Kmetz, Haiwang Yuan, Edith Hansen, Luann Hardy, Rebecca Turner, Emily Werrell and guest Chad Kearsley.

Announcements

Hannelore, who is on the CVL Faculty Development Group, drew the committee's attention to the Intellectual Property Conference at UK's Young Library, April 13. The group will also sponsor a workgroup in Louisville "Change and Beyond" with 3-400 nominated participants. Members of this committee may be nominated if they contact Hannelore. The group will develop a Faculty Development Plan. Hannelore also recommended the upcoming ALA program "How to do Reference in an electronic environment."

Introductions included Collegis representative Chad Kearsley, who attended to introduce the committee to using Collegis software for the Information Literacy Modules. Contact him if you have problems accessing the Collegis pages: [email protected]

Agenda items decided:

Session on Collegis

One question concerned availability of the training modules. The committee requested that they not be password or otherwise protected. That anyone could have access. It looks as if Collegis can do that.

The group looked at how to decide on the components of the pages.

Questions

Advice from Chad

  1. Do not use underlining as this may be confused with a link.
  2. Add a footer to each page
  3. Include a report of use - not seen by user. (Collegis do?)
  4. Include more metacontext in some pages (explanation of what you're going to do).
  5. Use the CVL forum for exchanging ideas.

Chad will build the module boxes and we will fill in the information. These are the boxes decided upon:

We don't have to use any box if not applicable. Everyone in the group will have instructor-level access to the modules on Collegis.

Some final decisions

Luann will do the glossary - send items to her to compile Search engines will go in with advanced searching techniques (Jill with Edith and Rebecca). We need a graphical designer with Web experience to give us ideas for logo, colors, etc. Collegis has a designer who may do this.

Chad will make Collegis modules for us before 3/26. He may be called for advice 919-376-3415, email: see above. We can put quiz questions in to Chad ready for Collegis to make effective.

Next proposed meeting Friday, 3/26 at Frankfort, 1:00-4:00.
