Marketing Subcommittee Minutes

MINUTES
KCVL Marketing Committee
February 29, 2000
10:00 AM

The Marketing committee met in the CPE Meeting Room B in Frankfort on Feb. 29, with the following in attendance: Judith Burdine, Debbie McGuffey, Sue Patrick, Kelly Reed, Carolyn Tassie, Laura Whayne and Miko Pattie. Judith Burdine, Chair, presented.

Sue Patrick, Marketing Director for KCVU, was introduced.

Miko distributed an update on the membership of the marketing committee and a new "fact sheet."

Miko reported on the groundbreaking ceremony. Photos will be placed on the web page under "About KCVL" - "Chronology". Also available on that page are usage and training statistics.

All initial training is finished There were 12 basic 2-day training sessions and 5 advanced sessions. There will be annual training at least twice per year and some special "on the road" training where it is needed.

Marketing packets were sent by OCLC. They contained a decal for door, notepads, tents for the computers and bookmarks. They were distributed to all libraries including some school sites.

To "get the word out" partnerships should be formed with other associations and training of the leaders in these groups would help improve their awareness of KCVL.

Efforts to reach the schools and train the teachers could be enhanced by getting on the approved list for Professional Development Training in the Education Cabinet.

Other partnerships could be with:
KET's professional training/tech. group.
School Site Base Councils
PTA/PTO
KASA- School administrators
The Center for Rural Development
Kentucky Council of Teachers of English
State Agencies could be trained one cabinet at a time, with articles in the employee newsletter.

Training the public could be enhanced by offering specific training at public libraries using subjects of interest to the general public, such as Genealogy.

There was an article about KCVL in "Today's Librarian," and Carolyn Tassie will submit an article for the chapter news in "American Libraries." There will be an ad from OCLC on KCVL on the Chronicle of Higher Education in March.

Sue Patrick reported that a survey was done by UK and 8.2 % of the people surveyed were aware of the existence of the KCVL while 18.5% were somewhat aware of our existence. This gave us a combined total of 26.7 % as compared to the Virtual High School with 18.3 % and the Virtual University with 28.2 %. This survey will be used as a base line for measuring awareness.

She complimented us on our efforts to make the state aware of KCVL and its services.

She will be submitting a RFP on redesigning our logo and reviewing our image. This does not mean that our logo will be changed. But it does have some design flaws. There are still some questions remaining on how best we can combine the three virtuals, (Library, University and High School), or if we want to combine them since the KCVL serves all of the citizens of Kentucky not just students.

The Marketing program will be designed to recruit students. Some ideas on recruitment of non-traditional students will also be needed.

The Virtual University will be offering an associate degree in arts this fall with full transfer to a four-year program. Other degrees are being looked at.

Possible media to use in recruiting of students would be billboards, TV and radio.

Getting the KCVL logo on to the front page of web pages would also help with awareness. Judy will contact libraries, via the list serve, and ask that all libraries that have activities planned for National Library Week notify Miko so they can be linked to KCVL Public service spot on the KCVL top page. Libraries would be asked to put the KCVL link on their top page of their Web sites.

Meeting adjourned at 11.50 AM.
