Technology Subcommittee Minutes

KCVL Technology Subcommittee
Meeting Record
April 28, 2000

Present: Tari Keller, Susan Brown, Paul Fuller (recorder), Cindy Page, Roberta Kirby, Gary Flanagan, Elsie Pritchard, Weiling Liu, Miko Pattie, Margaret Willingham, Parry Bratcher, Dave Block, Keith Stevenson,

Tari gave updates for the eastlib implementors. Karen Gegner, who was the UK implementation project manager was hospitalized with walking pneumonia and someone else is filling in.

Keith asked Dave about how things were going with the implementation of a major library and libraries in production on the same server. Dave said there hadn't really been any problems as yet and that Endeavor has not requested any special backups. There was a request to suspend one scheduled backup while a load was in progress.

Kentucky Endeavor Users Group. Miko would like to get the Users Group started by Fall to get more people involved. She requested volunteers to which Roberta and Perry responded. Cathy Rylander (Midway College) will also be invited to participate. The Kentucky Users Group may become part of the Southeastern Voyager Users Group later.

Training. It was noted that Linda Voyles who would be arriving for the afternoon meeting between EISI representatives and those assembled, would be bringing Endeavor's account of how many KCVL training days remain. Miko may request some additional funds for training if needed. She also needs to know how we want to spend the remaining days that have already been purchased. Those present listed topics such as more technical training (Web Admin, EDI, bulkload, advanced WebVoyage), electronic reserves, advanced acquisitions/serials, etc. Staff end users will be polled for their training needs. Miko will need these by May 15 and she reminded the group that the goal is to train those people who train in their libraries.

Network Update. There was a handout from the new Post-Secondary Education Technology Advisory Committee (PETAC) date 4/19/00. The group is the successor to the KCVU Technology Committee, composed of post-secondary CIO's and CPE/KCVU/KCVL representatives. It will meet quarterly and CPE is coordinating. The handout lists the current bandwidth on diffferent legs of the network and other information.

About KCVL>Services>Endeavor/Voyager. A handout of hardcopy of this Web page on the KCVL site was distributed for discussion and input.

The westlib pages were recommended as a model for the development of eastlib. It was suggested that direct links to the westlib pages for server information and support procedures be made from KCVL.

Suggestions for additional items to be included were library hours and contacts; performance standards when developed; more troubleshooting information; listserv info and links (in password protected area); and network configuration. The question was raised whether a performance section should be created.

Roberta asked whether the Incident Report could be made to include the date that the incident was reported.

Miko agreed to establish a listserv for the Kentucky Voyager Users Group.

New Clients. The policy guidelines and costs for adding new client libraries have been finalized. Transylvania is the first institution to really use the cost information to evaluate their options. It appears that they will implement on their own. Miko expects that the price structure will be most attractive to smaller libraries that don't have the resources to support their own installation.

Additional Software/Hardware. We need to prioritize the one-time funding requests for Citation Server, a test server, or ILL/Clio software.

Phase I ILL beginning this May/June is based on OCLC ILL through SiteSearch. For phase II, end-user-initiated ILL is planned using ISO 10160/10161 compliant software,

Actions: By May 15, the following are due to Miko:

  1. Additional training needs and priorities.
  2. Prioritized list of additional products to purchase.

Next Meeting: 6/1/00 at 1:00 p.m. in Louisville pending definite arrangements.
