WebZ Design Work Group Minutes

CPE B, Frankfort, Ky
June 27, 2000

Present: Martha Perry, Anna Marie Johnson, Beth Kraemer, Heather Wingfield, Cheryle Cole-Bennett, Margaret Willingham, Tom Kmetz, Cecelia Tavares, Susan Brown, Teri Weil

Kraemer reported that the upgrade to 4.1.1 should be complete and available by July 1st and that the Kentuckiana collection should also be live (finding aids only) by then.

Brown reported on the update of the help screens. We have been working on them but are holding off until the major redesign is completed. This opened the discussion about linking directly to a given help topic.

ADA requirements were discussed. It was decided to wait until the new look was completed before we create an ADA compliant site. The ADA compliant site would not use frames and would be text based.

There are often two options for full text in the EBSCO databases: HTML text and PDF. With the upgrade to 4.1.1 the interface is grabbing the PDF which sometimes causes a problem. The group would like to see a link to both the PDF and HTML text when both are available. If this is impossible them a link to the HTML text causes less problems. Kraemer will investigate the different options of fulltext available in the EBSCO native interface and the possibility of offering both options via WebZ.

The group would also like to see if it is possible to return the fulltext button that used to occur in the upper right corner. If possible this should link to the HTML text.

It was decided to put the option to "limit to fulltext only" which now occurs on the Advanced search screen on the basic Keyword search screen. The default will choice will be -no-. The goal for this to occur will be for the August redesign.

The group decided to design the interface to look like a combination of mockups four and nine. Susan will work on this and Beth will create a test site for all to view it.

It was further decided to change the database groups to:

General & Reference
Arts & Humanities
Business & Economics
Education
Science & medicine
Social Sciences
Kentucky Library Catalogs
List of All Databases/Create your own Database Group

The group also briefly discussed the wish list which has been updated to include Kevin's and others suggestions. Beth's goal is to get as much of this implemented for the August release as possible. Some will need to be implemented later because of time constraints.

The group wants the frame that now occurs across the bottom of the page to appear in the lower left of the page as it did in the 4.0 version of the software.

The three non-Z databases will be moved to the "search single database" area/button.

The group would like any links to be underlined. The default in the new version of the software does not underline them.

When dividing the catalogs into regions using the map of KY, the group would like to use the 12 regions of the state that KDLA uses with the public libraries.

In addition other groupings will be: Academic Catalogs, Public Library Catalogs, KCTCS, and All Libraries (may take some time to search).

Susan will be on vacation from July 10-21.

Beth will be on vacation from July 24-Aug. 7.

Depending on the need the group might meet again sometime in August
