KENTUCKIANA FINDING AIDS PROJECT The KYVL Kentuckiana Finding Aids Project is a digital resource that provides enhanced access to archival material such as manuscripts and photographs housed in Kentucky repositories. Currently, the collection is comprised of over 2,000 individual collection finding aids from 12 participating repositories. In the past, these finding aids were only available to those patrons who traveled to the individual repositories. For more information on getting involved in this project, please contact the Project Manager. An archival finding aid is a detailed description of the contents of an archival collection. Finding aids include inventories, registers and guides to assist scholars and researchers in identifying the scope of intellectual content present in a particular archival collection. Through searching and browsing a finding aid, scholars and researchers can more easily determine whether or not the collection holds appropriate material for their research needs. The EAD(Encoded Archival
Description) format for creating digital archival finding aids officially
became a standard accepted by the Society of American Archivists and
the Library of Congress in August of 1998. The EAD standard provides
an effective methodology for marking up archival finding aids for presentation
and searching. Several institutions and digital library projects have begun building collections of searchable archival finding aids. A selection is listed here by institution and/or project title.
