Staff Bios
- Ling-yuh W. (Miko) Pattie, Director

Since 1996, working with the library directors from public universities,
the State Librarian, the Council on Postsecondary Education, and hundreds
of librarians all over the state, Miko has been helping to build the Kentucky
Virtual Library (KYVL). Launched on November 1, 1999, the KYVL provides statewide
information services and levels the playing field not only for the students
at the Kentucky Virtual University but also for the citizens in Kentucky.

A native of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Miko came to the University of Kentucky
in 1966 to pursue her M. S. L. S. degree. Since 1968, she has worked as
a cataloger at Kentucky State University Library, as a cataloger and Head
of Cataloging & Automation at Eastern Kentucky University Library, and,
as Head of Cataloging and Assistant Director for Technical Services at University
of Kentucky Libraries.
She has received the 2000 Outstanding Alumna Award from the School of
Library and Information Science, University of Kentucky; has been elected
twice as an OCLC Users Council delegate (1990-93; 1997-98); has been selected
as the Academic Librarian of the Year by the Kentucky Library Association
(1994); and, has served as a lecturer and consultant for the Information
Research Institute in Beijing, China (1992).
- Susan Brown, Assistant Director
- Born and raised in Northeast Ohio, Susan got her BA in English from Hiram College
in Hiram, Ohio. She worked in college admissions for four years before moving
to Illinois get her MSLIS from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
As a librarian at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, she was liaison
to the Women's Studies, Asian Studies, American Ethnic Studies, and Southwest
Studies programs. She enhanced the collection, aided students and faculty
with research, and collaborated with faculty to incorporate Information
Literacy Skills into courses. She taught courses on research methods and
women's studies as well as numerous workshops on research and technology.
She also managed the library's website.
In her current position with the Kentucky Virtual Library she manages
the website; develops content for the website; answers research
questions from Virtual University students, faculty and the people of Kentucky;
teaches Kentucky librarians and teachers how to seek information in the
Virtual Library; aids and advises on technical issues; facilitates state-wide
workgroups in on-going development, and advises the director.
She has been a Girl Scout, sung in numerous choirs, been a camp counselor,
and been involved with community theatre. She has been known to fly kites
(which she keeps in the trunk of her car for quick access), sing loudly
to her colleagues, read, stitch, camp, and tramp through the woods. She
also has a passion for gardens.

A native Kentuckian, Jackie has an A.A.S. degree in Computer Information
Systems from Lexington Community College, a bachelor's degree in French
and History from Morehead State University, and a master's degree in
library and information science from Indiana University- Bloomington.

Before coming to work at KYVU/KYVL, she was a Circulation / Reference
Librarian and Computer Lab Assistant at Lexington Community College.
She was also Coordinator of Electronic Services and Library Instruction at
the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee where she was responsible
for training students, faculty and staff in the use of the Internet, cd-rom
& online databases & online catalog and participated in the planning and implementation
of a campus-wide network.
For 6 years, she was the Fine Arts and Museum Studies Reference Librarian
and coordinator of online services at the University of South Carolina,
Columbia, South Carolina.
In her current position at KYVU/KYVL, Jackie staffs the KYVL Help Desk
and works within the KYVU/KYVL Call Center to register students, answer
inquiries and provide assistance to students, faculty, and the public via
telephone, e-mail, web form, and print correspondence.
She provides interlibrary loan and reference service for Council on Postsecondary
Education staff, conducts statewide KYVL training sessions for librarians
; collaborates with libraries throughout the state on KYVL services; coordinates
the KYVL's statewide courier service and provides leadership on three KYVL
workgroups- Resource Sharing, Teachers, and Government Information Access.
Her community service activities include service on the Rowan County Adult
Basic Literacy Education Board, Rowan County Christmas, and community theatre.
