Appalachian Center (Univ. of KY)

This multi-disciplinary institute links University of Kentucky resources with Appalachian communities in order to "support community-based solutions to regional problems, increase awareness of Appalachian Kentucky and provide technical support to citizens and colleagues." It includes a collection of Appalachian maps, Appalachian demographic data, and a guide to community and economic development organizations serving Eastern Kentucky. Many free full-text reports are available online from Appalachian Center Publications .

Long-term Policy Research Center

This center provides research, data analysis, long-term strategic planning, coordination of resources and information across different branches and agencies of government and outreach to the public. The website includes a searchable database of recent articles produced by the Center on a variety of subjects ranging from Agriculture to Welfare and Poverty. Many of these articles, including Entrepreneurs and Small Business: Kentucky's Neglected Natural Resource, are available in full-text online (PDF format).

BGADD Bluegrass Area Development District

Kentucky's counties are grouped into regions known as Area Development Districts, or ADD's. The Bluegrass Area Development District (BGADD) was formally organized in 1971 at a meeting of elected officials and other community leaders from the seventeen Central Kentucky counties - - Anderson, Bourbon, Boyle, Clark, Estill, Fayette, Franklin, Garrard, Harrison, Jessamine, Lincoln, Madison, Mercer, Nicholas, Powell, Scott, and Woodford. Locally elected officials and citizen members comprise the BGADD board of directors. In addition to those general functions that it shares with the other ADD's, Bluegrass ADD has received designations from various Federal agencies that recognize the ADD as the regional body for those agencies' programs. Federal agencies include the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC); the Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD); and the Economic Development Administration (EDA). BGADD has also been designated an "Area Agency on Aging" and as such, receives grants to plan for, administer, and pass through operational funding for senior citizen programs in each of the 17 counties. The Bluegrass Region has also been designated a "Service Delivery Area" for programs under the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA). The BGADD acts as the administrative agent for the Bluegrass Regional Private Industry and Development Council, which allocates JTPA funds within the region. In its roles as the State-designated comprehensive planning and development agency for the 17-county region, Bluegrass ADD also receives State funds. Which are used to match Federal grants for a variety of activities. ADD's are also authorized to seek service contracts with State agencies to do specific scopes of work such as regional transportation planning and local implementation of the Job Opportunities and Basic Skills (JOBS) program of welfare reform. In addition to its regional planning role, BGADD (through its staff) also provides technical and management assistance to local communities on a broad range of topics.

Kentucky Economic Development Information System - Community Information

For many years the Cabinet for Economic Development, Division of Research has published Resources for Economic Development community guides. Produced in partnership with local economic development contacts and the Division of Site Evaluation, the Economic Development Information System provides current local economic development data on every major community across the state in a continuously updated web-based format. Statistical information presented includes community population, education, and employment by major industry.

U.S. Census Bureau

Information from the Census Bureau, one of the largest data producing agencies in the federal government, may be accessed in a variety of ways including a title, keyword or full-text search or by using the subject index. The Census Bureau also produces Kentucky Profiles which includes statistical data for the state, each congressional district and each county and Statistics of U.S. Businesses-Kentucky which includes information about companies, establishments, employment, payroll and receipts.
